CULTIVATING
SELF - Co-ed Group Therapy for Personal Growth and Self
Empowerment
Ongoing long-term therapy group
for men and women has openings. Cultivating
Self refers to the process of
transforming self-awarenes into action. This group is for
anyone wanting to increase self-understanding and
self-confidence toward attaining life goals. This group
will include Mindfulness-Meditation Instruction and
Assertiveness Skills.
Personal Growth is like cultivating a garden. The
ingredients for a healthy garden include nutrient rich
soil, specific kinds of seeds, adequate sunshine, and the
right amount of attention in the form of watering, weeding,
etc. Cultivating one's life requires similar investments of
attention and intention. What are you investing your
time, energy, and life towards? Are you watering seeds of
self-compassion, kindness, and patience? Or, are you
planting seeds of self-defeat and self-hatred? This group
teaches and supports specific, concrete skills for
intentionally living your life.

Doug Johns, LCSW has been in private therapy practice since
1998 where he teaches skills for assertive living and
decision making. A dedicated student of Zen Meditation
since 2002, Doug has a daily meditation practice through
which he practices and refines the skills he teaches. In
2008 Doug completed an intensive professional training in
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) under the
direction of Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn and Dr. Saki Santorelli of
the Center For Mindfulness at the University of
Massachusetts Medical School. Doug incorporates MBSR into
many of his groups. MBSR is a highly structured and
research driven approach for educating people in the use of
Mindfulness-Meditation for physical and emotional healing.
Replicated studies with MBSR have demonstrated improvement
in pain reduction, depression relapse, anxiety, and
attention problems.
